Please answer the following question below:

If you were in a car that was out of control and had to choose between hitting a concrete wall or a haystack, common sense tells you to choose the haystack. Explain using terms discussed in today's class why hitting the haystack is the smarter idea.

Hitting the haystack would be the smarter choice because it's a lot softer plus it's giving more give when you hit it so the stop time is longer so it's not such a sudden stop. As the concrete wall would be a sudden stop.

hitting the haystack would be smarter because the stop time would be longer, and it would cushion the car a little, i guess. and if you hit the concrete wall you would come to a sudden stop and cause more damage to the car.

The haystack because it would have a little bit of a cushion and the stop time would be longer.  The concrete would make the car stop immediately.  The haystack would move along with the car and the concrete would not.

THe haystack is a better choice because the time the haystack would take to stop your car is much longer than the time the wall would. THus causing less pain to your body that you would get from an immediate stop into a concrete wall

It is a smarter idea because when you hit the haystack, it pretty much won't damage your car. The reason is because the haystack makes a cusion for the car and the time it takes for the car to slow down/stop is longer, thus giving it more time to stop.

It would be smart to hit the hay stack because it would give in when you hit it and the car would have more time to stop. The car would abruptly stop if it hit a concrete wall.

Name: "Cory C"

It takes more time for the car to slow down.

Name: "Pat Stoll"

it would be better to hit the hay because it would take a greater time to slow the car down.

Name: "Sean Mulkeen"

Hitting the haystack would be a better choice because the hay will give and slow the car down causing less damage to the car, while on the other hand the concrete wall would cause the car to come to an imediate stop causing a lot of damage to the driver and the car. bad idea

You would want to hit the haystack because the haystack would give or cushion the impact, reducing the force. The momentum of the car would be less against the haystack than the wall because the wall does not want to move. The same thing applies to the running back on the film today. He said to relax when about to be hit so your muscles and body will bend as apposed to breaking. The haystack would bend and would simluate your relaxing, while the wall would simulate you tightening up your muscles.

it takes a lot longer of time for the haystack to stop you then the concrete wall so there is a less of an impact on your body when you have more time to stop.

By hitting the concrete wall, the car would have less time to stop.  Because it has less time to stop there would be more impact on it because it doesnt have time to adjust. Hitting the haystack would give the care more time to stop without causing alot of pain on your body andyour car.

When the car collides with the haystack, the force exerted by the car on the haystack is the same as the force exerted by the car if it were to hit a concrete wall. What the difference is, is that the haystack has more give to it, it will move with the car. Because it has more give, the time it takes the car to stop will be longer. Since the force is exerted over a longer period of time, the car will suffer less damage, as well as the people inside of it.

The concrete wall will not move in the same way that the haystack will, therefore the force of the car is exerted in a shorter amount of time. This will cause more damage to the car & the people inside of it.

Because hitting the hay stack would increase time that momemtum occurs, it lessens the force.

If a car hit a wall the time would be small and the force would be great,

if time is increased, then force is decreased

Hitting the haystack is a smarter idea because it slowly brings you to a halt causing less damage and injury, unlike flying straight into a concrete wall wich will total your car and cause you more injury because you stop immediatly instead of decelerating

I would choose the haystack because it's more soft than the brick wall. The haystack alowe the car to slow down because it isn't pushing back at the car with the same foce that the wall would. With a wal,the forces would equal causing damage to be done. THe haystack allows the momentum of the car to decelerate over a period of time where as the wall would instantly stop all momentum....

Hitting the haystack would be the smarter choice because the force of the car hitting the haystack is spread out over a longer time. It has a greater momentum, but this is only because it has more time to stop than the car hitting the concrete wall.

The reason why hitting the haystack is obviously better than hitting a concrete wall because the hay stack actually increases your time of impact instead of stopping you ALL at once which creates a large force exerted on you.

Hitting the  haystack, so this is not a sudden stop. The concrete wall would have been a sudden stop, which could lead to heavy injuries.
